Statement
I’m interested in the relationship of color, both uneasy and harmonious, engaging yet awkward, the pure beauty, sensuousness and shocking delight of color.I apply paint in washes of color, controlled drips, creating grids and patterns. Then I draw using my vocabulary of shapes, adding layer upon layer, redefining as I go.I use the transparency and the opacity of the paint to define form yet keep it ambiguous, to create a changing focus.I’m interested in the ambiguity of the picture plane, where boundaries between shapes, foreground, background and surface marks become interchangeable.
In my more recent work I have defined shapes more boldly, in effect suggesting characters communicating with each other as if the canvas is the stage.
